I recently noticed (when AbiWord 2.9.2 hit the Ubuntu Precise repos) that the ruler-widget doesn't seem to use the correct colors. Theoretically it could also be a problem in the themes though. Up to now I tested this with my own Gtk2/3 theme "Greybird" (github.com/shimmerproject/Greybird/tree/gtk3.3), with Ubuntu's "Ambiance" and "Radiance" themes and Gnome3's "Adwaita". I took screenshots of "Greybird" and "Adwaita", Ubuntu's two themes look fairly similar (white fg-color). If there's anything I can do to fix this in the theme (e.g. by styling the Ruler-Widget) I'd be happy to do that, but since this seems to affect all kinds of (bright) themes an upstream fix might be desirable.

we should see about fixing this for 3.0 did I say I hate themes?
Themes are just stupid.
Should be fixed at revision 31844. With the themes provided with Ubuntu, there is only a slight problem with the High Contrast theme where both the foreground and background colors end up being white. I added a test so that we would use black and white in such a case (if there is very little contrast between our two base colors).
