I am trying AbiWord for the first time, it is the 0.9.2 BiDi version; the system is NT4 SP5 Hebrew Enabled on a PC. To start typing Hebrew, I used the common Windows key-combination, alt-shift. This indeed switched to Hebrew, but introduced a strange "delay": The first letter key pressed produced the english capital letter; the next letter key produced the Hebrew character for the first key, and so forth, while space presses did not seem to take part in this party: The English equivalent would be typing "She loves you" and seeing "$Sh elove syo" (where $ stands for a non-English character). I closed and reopened, and the problem repeated. English typing is good, but once you try to get bidirectional, there are problems. Hope you can solve this -- I've been boycotting MS Word for some time, and I really appreciate your effort to supply an alternative. Thanks, Shai.
I just tried the non-Bidi version, and ran into a similar phenomenon: When using the Alt-Shift combination to switch to Hebrew characters, the same thing happens (first character shows up as Capped english, next characters enjoy a 1-letter delay). So I guess this is not related to the Bidi rendering, but to the handling of Alt-shift and the charset change. HTH, Shai.
