If there is only one document open then there should be a dialogue when the Close command is executed. The dialogue would offer the following two choices: 1)open a new document or 2)Exit. It would only take 1 extra click to respond. This solution would seem to give the users the least surprises in that a document would never be left open unintentionally and, at the same time, no user would ever be surprised by exiting the program when they didn't intent to.
Add a "Show this dialog next time" checkbox within that dialog box which could turn off the dialog for those who prefer to close out all the time. Also, under Tools->Preferences->Preference Schemes another "Show close dialog" checkbox to turn it back on when necessary. Then users could choose whether they would want to be bothered by this dialog at all.
I like mrphido's idea better than any of the other alternatives. That's why I'm putting votes on this bug "Close AbiWord or New?" with "Close", "New", and "Never Ask Again, Die, Die Die!" would be an even better compromise than the original bug.
