Description:   Opened: 2001-07-19 07:58
When I select File/Close AbiWord quits. Alse
File/Exit quits. There is no reason to have
two separate commands for the same operation.

In Word and many other programs File/Exit quits program
and File/Close closes the current document window and
leaves the program open so I can still use the menus
and toolbars to use file operations.

When I use Word and am finished with the current document
and want to start new document or open an existing
document I choose File/Close and File/New or File/Open
(or corresponding toolbar buttons). At least I don't
expect File/Close to abort the whole program (at least
AbiWord asks if there is unsaved changes;)

I *wish* AbiWord would behave more like Word and separate
File/Close and File/Exit functionality. Or perhaps I am
missing something or my version is broken? This really
bugs me!

I am using Windows 95B. AbiWord is horkana nightly build
July 17 2001.

This is a paradigm of SDI versus MDI. AbiWord on Windows use SDI were MS-Word
uses MDI.
Exit is here to quit the program in one command.
Close quit the program only if this is the last window.

This above statement is not quite accurate. Both Word and AbiWord are SDI, it's
just that Word does SDI better than AbiWord right now. Here is how AbiWord is
diffrent than most SDI apps:

If the current window is the only window, other SDI apps will close the
document w/out closing the application itself. Right now abiword has no
mechanism for doing that, so just closes the window thus also exiting the
application. The reporter has a valid point. AbiWord currently does not
inplement SDI properly and the bahavior of File -> Close is confusing.

Ideally, the terminology on the menu would be different to, like Close Document
and Exit AbiWord but that's another story. I am re-opening and marking as an
rfe. If you disagree, please explain how the current behavior makes sense.

if you have a single document open and choose close a new blank document should
spawned before allowing the window to close.

changing to open

we really need a usability catergory in bugzilla (a subcategory of FrontEnd?)

Bug 1560 has (or should have) some discussion related to this. (Bug 1560 calls
for an explanation of the SDI behavior of AbiWord (but AbiWord is MSDI, so the
explanation should address MSDI.)

Closed, as well as 1909 and 1911

------- Comment #7 From David Chart 2001-09-01 16:43:44 -------
