The abiword wrapper script adds the abiword font directory to the X server it is running on. The X server typically cannot access the font directory when it is a "terminal", resulting in a font not found dialog and abiword won't run. Remote X terminals share fonts either via NFS, or (better) xfs. To make abiword work for me, I added the /usr/share/AbiWord/fonts directory to the xfs font path in /etc/X11/fs/config. I had already configured xfs to be available on tcp port 7100 for the X terminals. There are many wrinkles in trying to make this work automatically for a non-technical user - so perhaps the best fix is to enhance the documentation, and figure that non-technical users aren't going to attach X terminals to their Linux system. On the other hand, being able to use terminals for word processing without paying an arm and a leg is a big feature of *nix vs. MS. My humble suggestion is to add the AbiWord fonts to the xfs font path when xfs is running on the system AbiWord is installed on. This should work for local users - and will continue to work for X term users who knew enough to share the same font server.
